HARARE – Former Zanu PF Mashonaland Central youth chair, Godfrey Tsenengamu was Tuesday arrested by police for allegedly convening an unsanctioned press briefing in Harare on Monday.

The budding politician confirmed this in a Whatsapp group chat, a day after he convened a meeting during which he denounced President Robert Mugabe and his wife, Grace.

“Following my press conference yesterday (Monday) at The Media Centre in Harare where I constitutionally expressed myself as a citizen, I have been picked up by CID Law and Order Harare Central.

“Am told that I am being charged for contravening the Public Order Security Act (POSA) by holding the press conference without police clearance. I am not moved zvichapera,” he said.

Tsenengamu was in 2016 ousted together with some Zanu PF provincial youth chairpersons for allegedly undermining the first couple.

This is after they had publicly criticised President Mugabe for allowing his wife to hold her countrywide rallies castigating party rivals, among them Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

But during his Monday press briefing, Tsenengamu blasted Grace, insisting she lacked the backing of party members in her perceived aspirations of becoming President Mugabe’s successor.

Grace last week told hundreds of party supporters who attended her Buhera rally she would rather take over at President than allow those who have spent 37 years with Mugabe in government to succeed him, as if they had not had their own chances.

Tsenengamu castigated Zanu PF loyalists who were clamouring for Grace’s elevation to President, saying they were misleading the Zanu PF women’s league boss.

“People have told you, that you are presidential material (in reference to the first lady) but I will take you back to 2014 when we fought tooth and nail for you in Mashonaland East, Masvingo, Manicaland and Mashonaland Central to become the Secretary for Women’s League.

“We stood so hard for you, sacrificed our own lives just for you to be the secretary of women’s league.

“So the people who are telling you that you can be the next president, are dreaming.”

Tsenengamu is an avowed Mnangagwa follower who insists the embattled VP must ascend to the highest job in the land.
